Analysis of opening sequences in terms of character introductions (AS)
Kick Ass Opening Sequence
The blonde girl at the beginning is introduced to the audience as rather spiteful and arrogant however she is also presented as superior and bossy as he has a gun which gives her control over the boy who is presented as inferior
Although at the beginning the girl is presented as arrogant and superior when the scene is switched to the scene where she is at school she is presented as 'that unpopular girl with no friends at school who gets bullied' for example nasty comments from her peers are thrown at such as 'nice backpack, still from the 6 year old'
Another way she is presented as lonely and without friends is through the editing as everyone disappears at once while she is still standing in the same place with noone to talk to or hang around with while she waits to be picked up from school. This is supported by the voice over 'no matter how many drug dealers she stopped she couldn't stop feeling alone'
She is also presented to the audience as independent/and determined to reach her goals she is seen training hard by herself at school even when it is shut and everyone is gone home to rest this is accompanied by the voice over as it says 'no one at school found out because she hacked into the server and gave herself the award for her perfect dependence
By contrast boy is presented to the audience as a lazy jerk who is clueless and has no idea this is shown where he is on his sofa slouching with a dull and sluggish face expression and has the body language of someone who just doesn't care it is also supported
by the voice over 'i had no idea what i wanted to do with my life' and 'help i don't know what channel i wanted to watch'
The boy (Marty) is also presented as soft as in the voice over he says 'i gave up being a superhero because it was way too dangerous'
Step Brothers Opening Sequence
In the begging the characters are dressed normally to suit to suit their personalities. This shows the audience that they are just normal people living conventional lives and shows a sense of normality. It can also help the audience relate to the characters more. The main 2 characters Dale and Brendan are dressed casually to represent their lazy attitude and stay at home lives. where as the parents are dressed smartly as they are going to work, which gives them a higher status as they are out working and earning a money for their children
High key lighting is shown throughout the opening of step brothers which creates a happy feel good mood about it and informs the audience the film is going to be a fun film. When Robert(Dad) is doing his meeting and notices Nancy (Mum) the lighting is all on her. The background and other people are in low key lighting but she is in high key lighting. This shows to us that to robert she stands out from the crowd and as he sees her as the most important person in the room
There is a few props used in the opening scene notably the toy guitar and some nachos these are used by Dale and Brendon. This shows the immaturity of the characters as they are grown men but still lounging at home eating nachos and playing with toy guitars! This brings humour to the audience.
